I’m here to write a post to dismantle the hype the cigar saver. Some people hope that they can leave their cigar in a cigar saver forever and come back to smoke it whenever. This is not true, leaving your cigar in a cigar saver for too long will snuff out the taste in the cigar and leave it tasting stale. You can get a cigar saver in many colors and a few different forms. The most complex cigar savers are electronic and have a humidor inside and a cigar cutter at the end.

Many critics say that it doesn’t make sense to buy a cigar saver because once the cigar is lit, all the complex flavors disappear due to the flame and smoke. Most would agree that if you put your cigar into a cigar saver and smoke it within one hour, it will preserve the smoke quality, a good idea if you’re looking for a smoke rather than a flavorful experience.

If you happen to move around a lot and can’t stay steady for an hour to smoke a cigar then consider purchasing the best cigar saver you can. Buy them as a cigar gift for those whom you know enjoy smoking cigars.

Hemingway Cigars

Hemingway cigars are a Arturo fuente cigar brand that boasts great flavors as notorious in all Arturo fuente cigars. Hemingway cigars are in limited production as making it’s unique shape is very difficult. This results in it being a bit expensive running in the price range of about 30 to 40 bucks a cigar. Hemingway cigars are usually released on special holiday occasions such as Christmas or other special events, allowing cigar smokers a precious rare treat during the most precious times.

This cigar is named after the famous Ernest Hemingway, a writer who produced the greatly appraised book “The Old man and The Sea”. He has been rumored to be smoke cigars but never had. His robust attitude and natural life living swagger was one of the reasons people believed that he smoked cigars even though he never did. The most Ernest ever smoked were cigarettes that originated in the Cuban region.

The Short Story Cigar is a famous brand of Hemingway cigars that can be enjoyed and finished smoking in about an hour. The cigar has a very unique shape that makes for a unique smoke. The Perfecto cigar starts you off tasting the cameroon wrapper and avoids the filler and then as it progresses to the bulge you begin to taste more of the fillers and less of the wrapper. There are many cigar gifts you can give to a loved one for various occasions, be it Christmas or their birthday or even valentines day, huh gentlemen? Even if this cigar gift is for the novice or the expert, it doesn’t matter because there are cigar gift sets for all of them. All you have to do is listen to my advice and you’ll be fine below.

If you’re giving a cigar gift to a newbie then you should start them off with a Macunudo cigar or a Montecristo cigar. Or a mild cigar that I have trust in, Arturo fuente cigars. These cigars allow your newbie to practice cutting and lighting his cigars.

If you’re giving a cigar gift to a pro, than you will probably want to pass him on a custom cigar box with his name on it. Or you can give him an ashtray with an inspirational message that they would value, maybe something funny or silly or something determined, something to help them remember YOU while they are sitting down puffing away at their cigar or another cigar gift would be a cigar cutter with their name inscribed on it.

You can get a travel cigar case if your giftee travels around a lot. The Thompson travel cigar case holds up to 8 cigars while they‘re on business or just vacationing. If you don’t think they will like the way the case looks then you can get any other type of cigar case that you think looks great.

Cohiba Cigars

Cohiba cigars are a brand of cigar made for Fidel Castro himself by the Habanos cigar company in 1966. The cohiba cigar  name originates from the type of leaves Columbus and his crew smoked when they first came to Cuba. There are two types of Cohiba cigars, cohiba Cuban cigars and Dominican cigars. The Cuban version were made for Castro himself because Castro was a target for assassination attempts (it was proposed that the CIA were planning to hand him an exploding cigar) and also a smoker of fine premium cigars, therefore making it necessary that Castro have his own tightly regulated brand of cigars.  The cigars were eventually released to the public in 1982. An interesting note, the factory that created his cigars were staffed by female workers (yay).

Cohiba Cuban cigars go through an extra third phase of fermentation, allowing it to taste smoother than the other Habanos brands.  Cohiba Cuban cigars use tobacco from the finest fields in Cuba. Like most cuba cigars, the cohiba cigar are hand rolled with long fillers. The end result are a line of cigars from a mild cigar to a cohiba robusto cigar.

Cohiba Cuban cigars are actually illegal in the united states although cohiba DOMINICAN cigars are allowed. If you are caught with cohiba cuban cigars the fines are very stiff: $250,000 for individuals plus up to 10 years in prison.

Cuban cigars are considered the best in the world by many cigar enthusiasts. However, a particular Dominican, Honduran or Nicaraguan cigar may s well taste better than a particular Cuban cigar.

Arturo Fuente Cigars

 Arturo fuente cigars are a family brand that contain high quality tobacco blends.  The cigars are then rolled over with African cameroon, Connecticut shade or an Ecuadorian Sun Grown wrapper. These cigars have a base of sweet spicy flavors and tend to  smoke in the medium bodied range, but more like a medium. The price range starts from inexpensive to fine expensive cigars, and the sizes range from the tiny cigarillo to the massive presidente. The Fuente family also produces Ashton, Montesino and Sosa Cigars. These cigars display a range of flavors from light to robust. 

Arturo fuente cigars started off in 1912 when Arturo, it’s founder, created a cigar bearing the logo of a lady kissing a man, called the “Tampa Sweethearts”. In 1924 his factory burned down. Being a business man Arturo did not want to file for bankruptcy which would screw up his ability to do business in the future, instead he rolled cigars for other cigar companies until he payed off his debts that he owed.

In the 1940’s, collaborating with his family, Arturo produced cigars in the back of his home and called himself the “Arturo Fuente Cigar Company”. The company was a success and demands for his cigars that he produce more He moved into a two story factory. Arturo lived on the top floor and produced cigars on the bottom. In the 1960’s his company grew even more successful and he moved into a 4 story building, where he handed off presidency to his oldest son, Carlos, and vice president Arturo Oscar.

The 1970’s was a time of turmoil for his company. The company had to switch over from Cuban tobacco to Dominican tobacco due to the us trade embargo on cuba. The company also had problems hiring skilled tobacco workers that were willing to adopt the Arturo fuente way of cigar rolling. The Arturo fuente company began considering moving their production into another country. During the 1980‘s they did, spreading the production of their cigars into Nicaragua and the Honduras. Even this location location didn’t do any better. They then moved into the Dominican republic, starting their company with only 7 employees. They now have 2,500 employees producing fine, Arturo fuente cigars. 

In 1994 Arturo Oscar retired and then opened up the “Tampa Sweethearts Cigar Company” in Florida once again continuing on, the Arturo Fuente legacy. 

Cigar Humidors

If you really like to see your cigars in perfect quality, then you should buy a cigar humidor. Cigars were made in the tropics where temperature and humidity is high, so unless you want dry tasteless cigars, placing and protecting it in a humidor should keep your cigar in the condition it was originally. Humidors are  necessary because cigars adapt and change according to their surroundings. If they are not kept in a good environment, they will age quickly and lose all of it’s great flavor. Humidors are usually a box made out of wood, (but many other materials have been used to make humidors from glass to tin cans) and come with a hygrometer (a device that measures humidity) fitted in. You might probably find a humidor with a thermometer fitted in as well.

Humidity differences

Cigars enjoy a temperature between 70 degrees Fahrenheit and at a standard humidity of 70%. I say standard because some people like their cigars either a little dry at 65% or a bit wet at 75%. Although if you keep the humidity too high the cigar might not light well and becomes vulnerable to mold, and if you keep the humidity too low the cigar becomes dry, burns too hot, and all the essential oils that make a cigar taste good will be lost. Make sure that when you’ve bought a humidor it stays tightly shut and let’s no moisture out, also make sure you know your cigar sizes when you go shopping so your cigars will fit when you place them in.

Cigar ethics after purchasing a new humidor

Most people after they’ve bought a  humidor will immediately put their cigars in. This is not a good idea because the wood of the humidor is still dry and wants to soak in as much water as it can, putting your cigars in too early while the wood of the humidor is still dry will result in your cigars being drained of their precious humidity and thus it’s flavor. Allow your humidor to humidify (become wet), and once the humidity reaches 70% as shown on the hygrometer proceed to place your cigars in. Once you’ve done this, don’t be afraid to flaunt your humidor when your friends take a pick of your cigars by putting it on a visible shelf.

Caring for the humidor

When the humidor’s water needs to be refilled, some people will add more humidor solution, this is not a good idea as it results in the solution being 75% solution and 25% water rather than the normal 50%/50%. Instead, refill it with distilled water. You can add the solution once a year, and only that many times. To add the solution, take the foam out of the humidor and wash it with distilled water and let it dry. If you want to replace the foam instead of washing it and drying it, ask your local florist for wet foam as they are likely to have them.

Storing cigars without a humidor

If you want to store your cigars without a humidor, place it in a tightly sealed Ziploc bag with a damp towel and place it in a dark place such as a closed closet. This should keep the moisture for a couple of weeks and the darkness would preserve the taste, but if you are a serious cigar smoker who smokes cigars often, than a humidor is highly suggested.

Humidors are essential to a good cigar collection. They keep cigars fresh and preserved, and  keep them enhanced with the essence they are meant to have. Most true aficionados, and novices who hope to become aficionados, advocate the use of a humidor. Using one will prevent your cigar from molding and keep them from aging too quickly and will allow you to smoke them in the form that they are truly meant to be.

Mild Cigars

If you’re a girl who wants a bit more flavor and a lot less ash in your cigar than you should definitely go for  mild cigars. Mild cigars are cheaper and therefore are a better option if you want to practice cutting and lighting your cigars, this being better than screwing up your precious Cuban.
